Group Project

Hi guys,
First of all, don't miss the post below this one about our pea lab. Not to be a dictator or anything, but I made an executive decision and assigned everyone a day to measure the pea plants for the next five days. :)

What we really need to focus on, however, is our group project. We need to narrow down our topic and split it up between the five of us ASAP, because we have a rough draft and references due in two weeks. This kind of freaks me out. I know none of us are finding the topics particularly interesting, but since we don't have any other ideas we should just get down to business so we can start our research and draft-writing - it's a big part of our grade and it's due SOON.

We had talked about and more or less settled on diets as a topic; are you all still good with this? If you're not ok with it, please suggest something else right away....but if no one has another suggestion, we'll have to go with this one because we're out of time to talk about it. There are five of us now, and we can either:

1) Focus the different aspects of diet (grains, fruits/veggies, dairy, meat, and fats/oils/sugars)
OR
2) Compare five different diets (Atkins, Weight Watchers, etc.)

Here are a few ideas that have ocurred to me: If we did the first idea, we could each take a part of the diet (from the Food Pyramid) and look closely at why it is important, what our body does with the foods (for example, how it uses carbs for energy - which we've already learned about a bit in class, and we could probably cite our textbook as a source), how there are good and bad foods within the group (example: trans fats versus unsaturated fats), etc. and how they all work together to make our body healthy.

As for option 2, I'm not feeling very creative about the comparing diets idea - but of course I'm open to suggestions, so please make comments! (Even if you don't have any ideas but you agree with the suggestions I just made, please comment so we know if we're all on the same page.)

Also, try to think of creative things we can do as part of our presentation. We're all on our own for the paper-writing part of it, but the presentation needs to be good. Remember the group that brought in organic and treated apples? Something fun like that. Thankfully we have more time to work on our project, but we should be thinking about it and discussing it together starting now.

Alrighty everyone - let's get the ideas going and decide on how we're going to divide this project up, so we can all get started on our research and writing!

Thanks for all your hard work - I know group projects usually suck but I think if we all get going and keep communication steady on this blog, we'll be just fine. :)

Pea Lab Update

Good news! Our peas are doing really well, and Aundrea and I sprayed the experimental pot today with the giberellic acid. We have to measure and record their growth for the next five days (not including the weekend). Don't spray the plants with the growth hormone again - just water them when needed like we've been doing. Anyway, I left the sheet from our lab packet up there; it is taped to the table and has Group 3 written on it, as well as the squiggly "x" that is on our pea pots. Record the height of the control and the experimental plants, and the health of the plants, on this chart.

After the five days of measuring, we are done with the experiment and can do the rest of our lab report. We are supposed to get together to do it so we know everyone has the same data. Perhaps we can just put all the data from the chart that is in the greenhouse up here on the blog, and let everyone copy it down? Meanwhile, here's a schedule so we are all checking and measuring the peas for the next five days. If you can't do it one of these days, say something in a comment and we'll switch people around.

Thursday: Chris
Friday: Kacy
Monday: Aundrea
Tuesday: Hector
Wednesday: Oksana

Thanks everyone! I'm so glad our peas are growing quickly and healthily!
